Telesat: New Lightspeed design, now 198 satellites but capex still at $5B, returns to export-credit agencies for review

PARIS — Telesat said it had re-engaged with the Canadian and French export-credit agencies (ECAs) in recent weeks on funding the $5 billion Lightspeed broadband constellation after a pause of several months to absorb the new schedule and the effects of inflation on components.

Telesat Chief Executive Daniel S. Goldberg said the new business plan is for 198 satellites, including 10 in-orbit spares, down from 298 originally, but that the ground segment and increased satellite costs mean it will still cost $5 billion.
