Launch Complex 13, Cape Canaveral, Fla., 1992
This was part of the original “Missile Row” at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, used for launching Atlas rockets. Although added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, it was not maintained and gradually fell apart. The launch tower was demolished in 2005, because of structural damage from corrosion.
Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, leased the site in 2015 for use as a landing site for its Falcon 9 rockets. The first successful landing occurred in December.
“I’m glad that they’re taking some of the old sites and using them for the new programs,” Mr. Miller said. “It’s important to remember what we did, but obviously it’s more important to keep going.”
